It’s hard not to feel overwhelmed during the Covid crisis. Looking out for each other, sharing what you have and focusing on what you can do in your local community has kept us grounded at Ladro, thanks to StreetSmart their SmartMeals program.
We’ve been cooking 400 meals a week for vulnerable people impacted by the pandemic, as part of a new pilot program, SmartMeals, brainchild of Adam Robinson – CEO of StreetSmart Australia in response to the Covid crisis.
SmartMeals puts empty hospitality venues to good use with a win-win concept feeding many in need at the same time. It supports venues like Ladro who have supported NFP’s like StreetSmart, for many years.
To say the pilot has been life changing is an understatement. It’s been life saving – business saving. Ladro has been able to keep two full-time chefs employed during the crisis and literally stay afloat – it works like this:
Ladro has been paired with local Fitzroy charity St Mary’s House of Welcome. We cook hundreds of meals for people in need, delivering them daily to the charity. Ladro is paid a small fee to cover food costs and labour with 100% of the fee going towards providing meals to combat homelessness and keep staff employed. It’s simple and brilliant, like all good ideas.
Now is a great time to share what you have. We’re urging anyone who can afford it to donate directly to StreetSmart. It allows us to provide as many meals as possible to feed an ever increasing number of people in need. If you’re in a position to do so, please…
We are all in this together and together we can grow this idea beyond the 400 meals Ladro provides. Our dream is to keep this initiative going well beyond the Covid crisis and we need your help to to it.
If you are a food manufacturer, farmer with excess stock, or in a position to sponsor the program, Ladro & StreetSmart would love to hear from you and have a chat. We’re not too proud to ask for help, especially when it helps hundreds more.

THANK YOU to everyone who has supported the program so far. We honestly could not have come this far without you.
We miss our mums. We’re sure you do too.
Nothing is more comforting than a warm, reassuring mum hug when life challenges us most, and Covid lockdown sure is testing that theory. This weekend most of us have to settle for a warm hug of mama style cooking instead. Thanks for you votes too – the two most popular options are in the boxes.
Ladro has two food box options with 3 x courses for you to reheat at home – brunch, lunch or dinner, for two, four or more. Add to the boxes with Prosecco, Wine, Negroni or fresh items from our LADRO SUPERMARKET.
Every Italian knows: Chi mangia sulo s’affoga – ‘He who eats alone suffocates’… But Covid lockdown wasn’t a consideration until seven weeks ago, so this Mother’s Day we encourage you to share a meal with your mum together, apart. Buon apettito XO

Bottomless Pizza returns in 2018 to Fitzroy and Prahran every Tuesday until Spring!
Get on your scooter and hightail to Fitzroy or Prahran to fill your belly with unlimited pizza for $20pp. Feast with a group of friends, your family or roll on in solo.
– Pizza Margherita [surprise, surprise]
– Badabing Pizza
– Mariners Pizza
– Pizza Puttanesca
Our 2018 Bottomless Pizza’s are the 4 most popular pizzas we serve at Ladro, so we know you’ll love them.
ROSSA vs BIANCA?
Coincidentally, the top 4 pizzas all happen to have a rossa, or red pizza base. This may have something to do with our outrageously delicious Italian sugo. Or it could just be that rossa pizzas really are better than their bianca counterparts. You be the judge! Ladro loves all of it’s pizzas like children, equally.
The first Italian pizzas were actually bianca style flat breads served as a peasant food and made simply with oil, herbs and garlic – tomato sugo, olives and anchovies are said to have been an addition soon after, and eventually cheese was added. In 1889 the Margherita Pizza was born in honour of the queen of the day. Find out more about the origins of pizza here. Feast on the Ladro ‘Mariners Pizza’ which is said to be the original pizza the Fishermen ate upon arrival back to shore and many pizza-files argue this is a tastier pizza than the Margherita.
Very few pizzerias actually serve this ancient recipe, but we do at Ladro. Less is more and this is truly one of the tastiest pizzas ever created.
If you are ever in Naples, be sure to visit Da Michele where they only serve 2 pizzas. The original Marinara and the traditional Neopolitan Margherita. There is always a very lengthy queue so be sure to arrive early or you could be left salivating, watching the hoards feast on these two misshapen pizzas with envy.
5 x courses matched to 5 x beers $55 pp.
From some of the best brewers in Australia.

SUSTAINABILITY at LADRO
It can be tricky knowing how to introduce sustainable practices into your small business, but we think this one is a no brainer…
We use a high-tec Closed Loop bio-composting system at each Ladro site to help reduce waste which would otherwise be biffed into landfill. This means that 100% of our organic waste is recycled into compost…That’s zero, zippo, nada waste! We sell it back to you for $2 a bag and make regular donations to local community gardens, schools and exchange it for goods from our farmer suppliers. Win win.
Just so you know eating and drinking at Ladro is one way you can lessen your footprint on the planet, we also:
– Use Who Gives a Crap loo paper.
– Use eco-keg mineral water by the awesome DHSMWCo.
– Use 100% Aussie owned renewable energy by Momentum.
– Use 100% biodegradable BioPak packaging.
– Burn only sustainable timber from The Green Centre.
– Make our own vino in eco-kegs for Ladro TAP.
– Use only the best local and, where possible, sustainable, free-range or organic suppliers.
– We give back to the community with our Charity BYO $5 initiative every Monday.
CELEBRATE THE ITALIAN WAY…
We love a feast and celebrating this festive season at Ladro means you can cover all the bases. Our ‘feed me’ menus at $40, $50 + $60 cater for all price points and dietary requests. In December we even have a $25 lunch menu keeping it simple + deliciously good…
… Find out more about functions in Fitzroy or Prahran here.
Pssst, we have a 24 hour 200 person licence in Prahran for some serious festivities!

Ladro is passionate about sustainability and has a zero organic waste policy. We recycle all our food waste, from chicken bones and carrot tops, to uneaten pizza crusts [who leaves the best bit?].
With two large Closed Loop bio-composters located in Fitzroy and Prahran, we recycle all our organic waste into usable garden fertiliser, eliminating all our food waste from being dumped into landfill.
WANT SOME COMPOST FERTILISER?
Customers can buy a bag [$2] or bucket [$5] anytime when when visiting Ladro or when ordering takeaway via Foodora.
BYO your own bucket and we will fill it up for you. Are you’re involved in a NFP community garden, school or organisation, or know an organisation needing compost, take as much as you like. We’re all about closing the loop at Ladro and giving back to the community. We no longer contribute useless organic waste to landfill. Instead, our waste is turned into useful compost fertiliser to make gardens grow food full of nutrients. Good for us, good for you, awesome for the planet.
Are you a local farmer? We would love to chat about exchanging compost for produce. We can give you cubic meters for goods we can use in the kitchen, herbs, vegetables, or anything you might have growing in your garden. Lets chat.

WHAT ELSE DO WE DO?
Ladro has incorporated many other sustainable practices into it’s restaurants. Here are a few including:
– Banning straws
– 100% bio-degradable packaging
– Regular waste audits for all our waste products
– bottle minimisation via tap beverages in kegs; 18 in Prahran, for beer, wine, kombucha and mineral water
– we have many other initiatives on the go too…
You’re invited to our next beer masterclass where we spoil you with 5 x courses matched to 5 x beers from some of the best brewers in the world [well we think so]!
Next keg off the rank is the formidable AKASHA BREWERY from Five Dock outside Sydney. Relatively unknown in Melbourne, but not for long, thanks to their fine attention to detail, consistency and innovation when it comes to brewing.
This Beer-gustation will be a bit different to those in the past…we will be featuring beers from several other breweries as well as AKASHA, all matched to 5 amazing courses from chef Arron Edwards.
